The stones represent the smaller and more simply decorated picture stones, dated to about 600–700 A.D. They have probably been part of a grave. The central motif consists of two horses, originally in different colours, fighting with each other. The scene probably depicts stallion duelling. In many places the horse was connected with the kingdom of the dead and was sacrificed in honour of the dead. They could also serve as a symbol of the sun and as traction for the celestial chariot.

The chequered pattern at the base merely serves a decorative function, although it may have heralded the sail that appeared on the later stones.
