The Picture Stone from Ardre

The stone dates from 1000–1100 and is carved on both sides. It was recovered from beneath the floor of Ardre Parish Church. The pictures consist of entwining serpents, their upper parts joined together by the ‘Irish coupling.’ This decoration was common in contemporary Irish art. The absence of the Christian cross and the context of the inscription give no indication of the stone being raised over a Christian person. The text reads:

‘Ottar and Gairvat and Aivat raised this stone in memory of Liknat, their father. Radjalv and Gairniaut arranged a worthy memorial to a brave man. Likraiv carved the runes.’
